I watched 60 Minutes a little over a year ago when we were just finding out who this Barack Obama man was. He was handsome and had a pretty wife Michelle who sat with him for the interview. I was impressed. Then the subject of smoking came up. He admitted he smoked but was going to quit before campaigning. Michelle even told America that if anyone sees Barack smoking to let her know.
But he recently started up again. He said he did quit for several months. I heard he was chewing Nicorette gum. He knows much of the public would rather not see their possible future president of the UnitEven though he stated he'd never been a heavy smoker he's smoking again. It's the stigma of smoking.
Being a former smoker myself I do acknowledge that of all the addictions, smoking is one of the toughest to quit. For years when I would even entertain the thought of quitting smoking (which I could barely let myself think about giving up my cigarettes) I would think mostly of the dependence I had on them---they were my friend in good times and bad. They were always there for me if life got too stressful. If I wanted to be alone for a few minutes, on a break at work maybe, I would grab a cigarette and I'd be good to go.
Stress is one of the biggest reasons people go back to smoking because, honestly, cigarettes DO make you calm down and relax. Technically, with all the ingredients cigarettes have in them, they should make smokers hyper. Maybe it's all in the mind anyway---what cigarettes do for you. I just know it's a tough addiction to kick. Obama apparently knows that too.
